The only way to successful promote your crowdfunding project means you are going to have to tell people about it. This means you have to leverage your crowdfunding network.

Unfortunately, it’s not a case of “if we build it, they will come”.  Setting up your page is only the first step. Now you need to get people onto your page.

There are four main ways to do this:

  • Via email
  • Via social media
  • In-person networks
  • The press

Crowdfunding relies on a crowd. Everyone has a crowd. Including you, and each and every member of your team.

Your network will include your friends, your family, your fans and followers on social media, and community groups you are associated with.

If there is a team behind your student project, then each individual should be contacting their own networks. This allows you to reach a very wide audience – simply talking to the people you know!

The present section will show you how to approach your own networks – and go wider into your community – through email, social media, in-person networks and local newspapers. Again, when appropriate, it’s important each member of your team is committed to contacting the people they know to spread the word – it’s the secret to a successful project!


Sometimes people think that because crowdfunding is online, they can’t promote it offline as well. In truth, this is one of the best ways to promote your project.

Whether it’s telling your neighbour about it in the elevator (or putting a small poster in the same elevator), or throwing an event or party, talking to the people you know is a very effective way to get them involved.

There’s also the ability to get your friends and family to promote the projects to their wider networks if they’re willing.

and drink, and invite them somewhere.


Getting people to your page

link (make sure you have their contact details!) People are more likely to click the link then to type it into their browser on their computer.

Kelly spends some time talking to as many people as she can about the campaign, and keeps a crowdfunding network notebook for people’s email addresses. Each night she emails anyone who’s been interested and manages to collect £150 from a few people who followed up.

She also pops into the local environmental organisation she used to volunteer for. She talks with them, and they admit they can’t quite give as much as she’d hoped, but they do agree to give £350 in return for being acknowledged and receiving a printed and bound copy of her PhD.

Just by leveraging her crowdfunding network Kelly is now at £2,605 – just £170 away from her goal!
